Something I thought about:

  • Nonlinear storytelling and craft in An Na’s The Place Between Breaths and Malinda Lo’s Last Night at the Telegraph Club. In Na’s book, I was particularly caught up in the seasonal and perspectival shifts. The story jumps around in time in way that makes the narrative feel like it's been refracted through a prism. In Lo’s book, I was surprised by how a brief timeline — the kind one might find in nonfiction — can be used to create tension.
